Getting older is not a condition or a disease and it doesn't mean we lose the ability to make choices, learn or experience love and affection. Moving into a care home is a major life event and we all share the same desire to live in a safe and comfortable environment.
To be physically and emotionally well we need to actively participate in daily life. This is not an added bonus of good care and support but a vital requirement. When a person is left to sit for most of the day with little stimulation or movement a number of detrimental psychological and physical changes can occur.
The benefits of regular activity are:
- Muscle strength and joint mobility increases
- Appetite increases
- Sleep pattern and quality improves
- Concentration and memory improve
- Feelings of loneliness and isolation reduce
- New friendships are formed
- Creates a stimulating environment
... the list could go on and on!
This is why at Primrose Lodge Southbourne we always encourage participation in regular activity, even if it's just a bit of silly fun with balloons!
